Derivatives are a thing of beauty. Culture evolves throughout time and art is not immune to this evident product of society. With that being said, many of the contemporary art that we see, experience, and purchase today is derived from the centuries of creatives that have served the art world centuries prior. From the Leuvre, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago to the Salvadore Dali Museum in St. Petersberg there are several works at Gardner Colby Gallery that allow you the opportunity to have a new contemporary piece that reflects the well known artworks of the past and present.
Delightfully embracing the irony of contemporary art, Geoffrey Gersten’s Dream a Dream alludes to the spot painting’s of Damien Hirst in a creative and reflective way. His nods to pop culture are not only extracted from the art world but from other aspects of the cultural zeitgeist as well. It goes without saying that Salvador Dali has been an extremely productive figure in terms of surrealism and creating works that realistically render fantasy. It is also worth noting that surrealism and artistic movements that fall under the umbrella term are trending as of 2023. In the case of Kevin Sloan who creates extraordinary artworks of nature and allegorical motifs and meaning has embraced and pioneered Optimistic Surrealism which the artist refers to as Magical Realism. His work is fantastic and is the perfect addition to any collector who appreciates nature and/or surrealism. While Salvador Dali utilized elephants in his works, so too does Kevin Sloan. His work, The Citadel, is a remarkable example of allegorical magical realism that features an elephant and an unlikely situation rendered in a realistic fashion.
