IN THE STUDIO WITH Theresa Girard
Tell us about your background. When did you start creating art?
I have loved the art journey since crayons. I crafted my own education, and evolved in the European fashion of apprencticechip. I credit several talented mentors for their time and knowledge.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, current events, and all things that make life interesting.
What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?
Following a walk to clear any distractions, I head to the studio very early. My studio is a sacred place, my cathedral of sorts. I have a morning playlist of classical and softer music. After a few cups of coffee I let it rip with salsa or rock and roll. Music is sometimes a game changer. I do find myself spending shorter, more productive time in the studio, as opposed to a full work day.
How do you describe your work?
When approaching the canvas, I am unsure if the process will be heavily marked, textured, or quiet. I am not looking to reveal or conceal, to clarify or dissolve. I am searching for a presence of paint and a conflict in color, bold or perhaps subdued. It takes time to search and allow the painting to dominate the interaction. Quiet frustration seems a need to describe a moment, a feeling…
Did you ever go on a vacation that changed your perspective, and in turn was reflected in your art?
Travel creates a new perspective for my work. Most of it revolves around seeing interesting things and of course museums. (The RISD and the Baker are favorites) A true to Cuba had the most impact on my work. The artists there work with almost nothing and create the most amazing things. Their dedication and enthusiasm left a strong impression. I credit that trip with a discovery of new colors and bolder marks.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not painting?
When I’m not working on my paintings, I enjoy new projects, sculpture, and urban pieces. I love teaching and devoting time to furthering women artists & creatives.
What do you hope viewers see in your work?
I am continually striving for the finished work to speak louder than I can communicate verbally. I am asking the viewer to have a dialogue with my work and form their own intimate conclusions, I am humbled by the support given to me, and grateful for all of the kindness shown to me on my journey. I never take that for granted.
